Taiwan-based Getac Technology on Tuesday announced two fully rugged tablet computers and a partnership with BestCom Infotech, as part of its efforts to expand its local sales and services.
The V110 tablet features a thinner and lighter form factor than previous products, with an 11.6-inch touchscreen and a convertible waterproof backlit keyboard, while the F110 tablet is a pure tablet of the same size.
Both of the new rugged tablets run the new Intel Haswell chipsets and the Windows 8 operating system. The F110 will begin shipping in November and the V110 in December.
The partnership with BestCom, one of Taiwan's largest commercial IT products resellers, will help Getac grab a 30% share of the local rugged computer market in the coming years, compared with close to zero at present, said Getac chairman James Hwang.
'Getac has accumulated a lot of product solutions over the past few years and we will gradually bring these solutions back to the Taiwan market through our cooperation with BestCom,' he said at a news conference.
Rick Hwang, vice president of Getac's industrial product business unit, told reporters that the two new rugged tablet PCs can be used globally in various sectors such as national security, public security, mass transportation and public utility.
He said Getac aims to increase its worldwide rugged computer shipments by at least 20% next year to take about 15 percent of the global market, which is dominated by Japan's Panasonic with a more than 60% market share.
Getac was founded in 1989 as a joint venture between US-based GE Aerospace and MiTAC, the third-largest computing group in Taiwan, to supply defense electronic products.
In 2007, Getac became the world's third largest fully ruggedized computing solution supplier under the Getac brand name. Rugged computers now account for roughly 34% of the company's revenues, compared with more than 60% from its component module business such as computer casings.
