Windows 8.1 Preview



Lisa Gade shows the new features in Windows 8.1 Preview using the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix. Windows 8.1 Preview (formerly called “Blue”) is available for free download and the final version should be available in the fall of this year. it will be a free upgrade for Windows 8 PCs and tablets (including Windows RT models) that you’ll be able to download from the Windows Store on your Win8 computer.

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix Review



Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix Windows 8 transformer style hybrid tablet. This is an 11.6″ Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge tablet with Intel HD 4000 graphics. The tablet has a full HD IPS display with 400 nits brightness and it weighs 1.8 lbs. It comes with a dock that looks and feels more like a traditional Ultrabook with Lenovo’s excellent keyboard, a secondary battery, 2 USB 3.0 ports and a mini Display port. The Helix has a Wacom digitizer with a precise and pressure sensitive pen, making it good for artists and note-takers. The price runs from $1,679 to $2,200 US.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Review



Lisa Gade reviews the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Android smartphone on AT&T. The Active is largely the same as the standard Galaxy S4 and the difference are: water and dust resistance, an 8 rather than 13MP rear camera, TFT instead of Super AMOLED display and front mechanical buttons instead of capacitive. The phone runs on the same 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 CPU with 2 gigs of RAM and 16 gigs of storage. It has a microSD card slot, front camera and a full HD display. It runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung’s TouchWiz software.

The 13.3″ Air starts at $1,099 US with the 1.3GHz Core i5, 4 gigs of RAM and a 128 gig PCIe SSD drive. You can get it with 8 gigs of RAM and higher capacity SSD drives. It has a 1440 x 900 display, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and a backit keyboard. It has the same design as the outgoing model.

Lisa Gade reviews the Sony Vaio Pro 13. This is one of the first Haswell Intel 4th generation Ultrabooks on the market. It’s also currently the lightest 13″ Ultrabook at 2.34 lbs. It has a carbon fiber body, is very slim and good looking. It has a full HD IPS touch screen and it’s available with Intel Core i5 and i7 CPUs with Intel HD 4400 graphics. The Vaio Pro is available with 4 or 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM, and a 128, 256 or 512 gig SSD. Price starts at $1,249 for the Core i5 model. Sony also makes an 11″ version (Vaio Duo Pro 11) with the same specs.

Lisa Gade reviews the Acer Aspire P3 Windows 8 tablet. Acer calls this an Ultrabook and uses the Aspire rather than Iconia brand, but it’s really an 11.6″ tablet with a keyboard case. A very good keyboard it is too for a thin Bluetooth design. The P3 runs on a 3rd gen Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5-3339Y CPU (a lower power i5 designed for tablets). It has 4 gigs of RAM and a 120 gig SSD. The 1366 x 768 display supports 10 points of multi-touch. It lists for $899US.

Think of this as the 13.3″ Zenbook Prime Ultrabook, but this time you can remove the display portion and use it as a tablet. It has a full HD IPS touch screen, a 1.9GHz Core i7 CPU, Intel HD 4000 graphics, 4 gigs of RAM and a 128 gig SSD. The “dock” feels just like the Zenbook keyboard and it has a second battery, 500 gig HDD, USB 3.0 ports, Ethernet and a mini DisplayPort. It sells for $1,499US.
