If knowledge is power, then NYPD officers will soon have a powerful new weapon in the war on crime at their fingertips: tablet computers.
Speaking at the New York Police Foundation breakfast at the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan on Tuesday, NYPD Commissioner William Bratton announced the pilot program -- which will equip officers with the hand-held tablets, tying them to a stream of information funneled through the department's high-tech Domain Awareness System. The massive information-gathering system, which uses surveillance cameras and radiation detectors to help track targets throughout New York City, will allow cops to use the tablets to access that surveillance info, as well as crime reports and other intelligence.
It was not immediately clear how many officers will be equipped with the Microsoft system during the pilot program, to be implemented in the next three months.
During his nearly one-hour discussion on the state of crime-fighting in the city, Bratton also said the NYPD will be collaborating with metropolitan-area police in Los Angeles and London to assess and develop anti-crime strategies and policing tactics. One topic for discussion will be how London cops are dealing with stop-and-frisk issues, while Bratton said a topic being looked at with Los Angeles cops is the idea of predictive policing -- using algorithms to help predict crimes.
