Mobile technology has become an ever-present part of our lives.
One Eastern Kentucky school district is working to make learning on mobile devices a reality in the classroom.
Tuesday was an exciting day for students at Buckhorn High School.
The school board used leftover Title 1 funds to purchase brand new tablet PCs for students in grades 8 through 12.
'The one thing we feel like with this device, it levels the playing field for all students. Every student has the same device,' said district technology coordinator Michael Smith.
Students will be able to use their tablets daily in class -- for everything from taking exams to browsing a variety of online resources -- and then take them home to continue their studies. They will also be able to borrow e-books through the Perry County Public Library.
What do students think of the new device?
'I like it, it's different,' said senior Timothy Baker, who is also a part of the Student Technology Leadership Program. 'Kind of hard to get used to, but I think it's really going to help in the classroom. It's going to make learning a lot more fun for the students and a lot more efficient as well.'
Paper textbooks aren't going anywhere, at least not yet. School officials say the new tablets will provide more ways for students to learn.
'The learning is going to go outside the classroom,' said Smith. 'In the past, you know, everything kind of happened there. All the resources were in our libraries.'
Now, Smith says, students will have a world of information at their fingertips, wherever they go.
Buckhorn planned to hand out 100 tablets Tuesday afternoon.
1,350 students in grades eight through 12 will receive the new devices district-wide.
