Wandsworth councillors move into digital age with tablet computers at meetings

Councillors are to get interest free loans to buy tablet computers in a bid to save money on paper.

Wandsworth councillors rubberstamped proposals which will see the council move into the digital era by accessing documents through the Modgov app on February 5.

The move is expected to make an annual saving of £29,093.

Money usually reserved for the provision of IT equipment will be put towards the council's savings target, adding a further saving of £50,000.

Interest free loans will be on offer to help councillors purchase their iPads, Androids or Kindles.

A number of members have expressed some concern committee documents may be too large to download onto tablets and they may struggle to use them.

Some councillors admitted they have never used a tablet computer.

A decision was also made to reduce committee cycles and council meetings from six to four per annum to save money.

The move will make a saving of £36,000, with two roles in the administration department cut.

Opposition councillors opposed the move and requested the council reduce committees to five a year.
