Just over 290 tablet computers have been distributed to students of the Windsor School for Special Education, under the government's pilot Tablets In Schools Programme.
There are four campuses of the school and the entire population of intellectually and physically challenged students in Duncans Pen, Spanish Town; Seven-west, Greater Portmore; Commodore, Linstead; and Denbigh, Clarendon received tablets.
Addressing the handing over ceremony at the Greater Portmore campus, on November 5, Executive Director, Jamaican Association on Intellectual Disabilities, Christine Rodriguez, urged parents and guardians to play an even greater role in the learning and caring process.
Mrs. Rodriguez said the devices will provide the children with a window to the world and that it is important for parents to appreciate the value of responsibility accompanying the technology's introduction to the child's learning process.
'The value of responsibility is one of the most important elements of good character. A tablet is a very valuable piece of technology and e Learning believes in us enough that they will be giving every child a tablet. It is now your mission to teach your child to become a responsible person, to care for the tablet and use it well,' she said.
'We have to nurture the children, affirm them, and care for them. It is the way we handle our children which will help them grow in that sense of responsibility. I am calling on stakeholders to begin talking at Parent-Teachers Association and staff meetings to help our children to become responsible, successful students, and (eventually) successful adults,' the Executive Director added.
Also addressing the gathering was South St. Catherine Member of Parliament, Fitz Jackson, who challenged the school community to ensure that the Tablets in School programme becomes a success.
He pointed out that each and every child has the ability to learn and, therefore, should be afforded the opportunity to do so.
'In that regard, the role of the parent becomes critical. The general education programme of the country requires that the parents be an integral part of the learning process. Windsor parents now have the opportunity to demonstrate how the tablets must be kept and used for the betterment of Jamaica,' he said.
The parents and teachers were elated that the school was chosen as a recipient. One parent, Nicole Satchel, said she is pleased that her child is in the pilot phase of the programme.
'I'm happy for it and appreciate that they considered Windsor School of Special Education, because the kids need it here. It will enhance their learning activities. I'm really grateful,' Mrs. Satchel said.
Kimela Johnstone, told JIS News that it is a vote of confidence in the ability of the teachers and special education students, for them to be in the pilot programme.
'It's awesome what e Learning and the Government have done for these children, and I know that the children will benefit tremendously from it. Think about the endless possibilities that the tablets offer. The teacher can now more effectively manage the classroom, helps with control and enhances the learning experiences,' she said.
The Windsor School for Special Education is one of 38 recipient schools and institutions to benefit under the $1.4 billion Tablets In Schools Pilot programme. Some 25,000 students are to benefit, including special needs children.

Dell Black Friday 2014 ad leaks with sub
Summary: The first major tech retailer to see its Black Friday ad leaked will have doorbusters that include a $149.99 8-inch tablet, a $189.99 laptop, and a $199.99 desktop all powered by the latest version of Windows.
With Halloween over, it's time for the next trick-or-treat on the calendar: the run-up to Black Friday, the shopping day after Thanksgiving turned retail extravangaza that includes some of the most publicized leaks this side of an Apple product launch. Those leaks are the ads that once first circulated in Thanksgiving newspapers, but now show up online as soon as a tipster provides them to one of the many Black Friday-oriented sites on the Internet.
This year, Dell is the first major tech retailer to suffer the leak of its ad, and it provides a clue to one of the big themes of the 2014 holiday shopping season for PC sales. For months, we've been talking about how Microsoft is trying to grow Windows 8.1 market share (and thus maintain overall Windows OS mind share) through cheaper licensing to device makers, with much less expensive Windows tablets and laptops starting to reach the market.
Given some of the deals Dell is offering as part of its Black Friday sales strategy, we can expect a lot of these cheaper Windows PCs and tablets gracing other Black Friday ads soon. As has become a Black Friday trend in the last couple of years, the company is offering 'doorbuster' deals that are essentially flash sales with lower prices to stoke demand. Not surprisingly, a few of the Dell doorbusters features sales on budget-priced Windows systems.
For instance, the Venue 8 Pro 3000 tablet was just released the other day for $199.99, which is cheaper than Windows tablets in the past, but still more than a similar 8-inch Windows 8.1 slate like the Acer Tab 8 W. Dell will be offering the Venue 8 Pro 3000 for $50 off between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Black Friday -- the same price as the Acer sells for today.
If you prefer a laptop instead, Dell will offer an Inspiron 15 for just $189.99 at the stroke of midnight on Black Friday until the notebook sells out. At 8 a.m., it will put on sale the Inspiron Small Desktop for $199.99, again in limited quantities. In neither case will you get a powerful system -- each comes with an Intel Celeron processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive -- but the pricing is typically at least $100 less than the cost of a Windows PC in the not-so-distant past. (Though Dell did offer a similar deal for an Inspiron laptop for Black Friday 2013.)
Other doorbusters include a pair of Android tablets with Intel Atom dual-core processors: the 7-inch Venue 7 3000 for $99.99 starting on Thanksgiving at 6 p.m., and the 8-inch Venue 8 3000 for $149.99 beginning at 8 a.m. on Black Friday. There's also an Inspiron 11 3000 2-in-1 Windows 8.1 laptop/tablet hybrid that becomes available for $349.99 at 8 a.m. on Black Friday.
Dell also has a few non-doorbuster PC deals if you're looking for some a bit more powerful (and pricier). You can grab an Inspiron 15 3000 with an Intel Core i3 processor for $379.99, or one with a touchscreen display, Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a terabyte hard drive for $579.99. Desktops deals include a version of the Inspiron Small Desktop that, at $399.99, runs Windows 7 Home Premium for far more than the Windows 8.1 doorbuster, though you do get a Core i3 CPU and terabyte hard drive in exchange; or a traditional Inspiron tower with Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 1TB hard drive $499.99.
Expect more leaks in the coming days, promising further Windows 8.1 deals as well as the usual jockeying over the best iPad pricing for the Black Friday weekend.

RIVERSIDE: 28 tablet computers disappear during school break
Twenty-eight tablet computers were stolen during an apparent break-in at a Riverside school, officials say.
The burglary was discovered early Monday, Nov. 3, at Bryant Elementary School, 4324 Third Street.
Someone apparently broke into a second-grade classroom where the Samsung devices were stored in a electrical charging cart, said Riverside Unified School District spokeswoman Jacquie Paul. The cart also was taken.
The estimated value of the missing equipment is $25,000.
The theft hit the school particularly hard, Paul said, because Bryant Elementary specializes in arts and innovation, so computers and other devices play a particularly prominent role in everything from reading lessons to map lessons.
'It's not like we're just losing stuff,' Paul said. 'Somebody stole their learning tools.'
